Groomercise #1: Look At Your Bride

Every wedding I shoot I try to make it a point to pull the bride and groom aside right before they go “on.” Most of the time, by this point in day they are both a bundle of nerves. They are nervous about the logistics of the day...is everyone in the right place, are people having fun, and oh yeah, they’re about to get flippin’ married!
I believe brides instinctively soak up the ceremony a little more than the groom might. But it doesn’t hurt to remind the guy that this is the moment. So when I pull him aside I try to say; “This is it. There will be many times in your marriage that you will remember how much you love her. Make this one of those moments. Be present, take it all in, notice how your bride looks today. You will probably not remember a single word the pastor says, but you will remember how she smiles, so look at your bride. I’m sure you don’t want pictures 20 years from now of you staring intently into the pastor's eyes (those always turn out creepy). Have fun, smile and again, congratulations.” But usually by this time I’m getting caught up in the moment so what really comes out is “duuurrrrrrrr….you should look at your bride, she’s pretty.”
So if I didn’t say that to you at your wedding, or I'm not able to in any future events, that is what I mean.

Alright, so back in the day I was once a groom. My bride felt it best that I stand in front of others on our day, rather than looking behind a camera. And one thing that I've found is that there are books written for brides, however, I have yet to see list of helpful antidotes on how to be a great groom.

So from time to time I'll be posting some advise as a previous groom (that wasn't very good at his job) and as photographer that has gotten a chance to see many wonderful events.

This past week I've been working on getting some collateral together for clients. Well I was finally able to pick everything up from the printers today. The cards are from Hip Printing (Zachary down there is the man), and the tri-fold brochures are from Alpha Graphics (they know what is going on).

In early October of last year I was able to sandwich in a hunting trip, a wedding, and a corporate event. The Building Champions Experience was one of the best events I was able to be a part of. Recently, Building Champions updated the website for the 2009 Experience. All of the photos you find on the site were taken by me. I highly recommend attending this year if you can.

For years I've gotten family photos of friends that seem a little all to cheezy. Now don't get me wrong, but my style has never been the normal. So I'm offering this season a chance to turn up the cheese factor to 11.

So for those that are interested I am doing holiday photos with a twist...ugly sweaters. In addition to the the time together of taking these photos, I am asking that you head down with the family to your local Goodwill to pick up the ugliest, cheesiest, and brightest sweaters that only Aunt Gretchen would be jealous of owning.

From there we get together and take some of the highest quality Christmas photos possible with enough cheese to choke a donkey.

The New Road

I've heard that when the market takes a dip it's a recession, but when you lose your job it's a depression. Well two weeks ago, the contract on my main account ran out and also because of current market conditions, I was let go from my job.

But I can truly say is that I am not depressed.

For last three and half years I have had the pleasure of working for a company that I will use as a measuring stick to all other positions that I may fill. The Surgeon General even contacted me to make sure I properly warning future employers that the bar has been set very high.

The possibility still stands that I may go full-time with my photography. So if you know of anyone that is looking for Wedding Photographer please have them contact me. I am branching out into the corporate world, doing professional headshots and office portraits.

Now I'm not sure what the future holds, but I know God has a hand in all of this.

I've known Amanda for years, which why it was so cool that she has asked me to photograph her wedding. So the other day we decided to brave the high gas prices to meet up and take some engagement photos.

*FYI (For Your Information): getting engagement pictures are a great idea, for most couples I meet the only have pictures they have of themselves are in the style of the classic Myspace photo. You know the one, where whomever has the longest arms holds out the camera slightly elevated over the photoee's head.

Multnomah Village is one of my favorite areas in Portland. My problem is I always forget about it. I think it's because the inhabitants that live in the area flash one of those "Memory Erasing Machines" just as I'm about to leave. Strategory!

Christine and Rick are so cool. And it's not just because they live the in "The Millage" (I made that up). But they are so sweet, and were so willing to do every stupid idea that I had.

I'm so excited for 2008. I've already been able to book a couple of weddings and I can't wait to shoot these couples over the next year.

My first wedding was with Christy and John. They were married in a little town just outside of Redmond, OR. And I'll tell you what, they now how to put on a party. But what I liked about it the most was how intimate the cermony was. I dub this the best wedding of '08 that I've been to. :)

The Sadlers and a couple of Traffas'

It's been so cold latly, but no snow. Except on Christmas day, which my wife and I were in Arizona. But I'm so thankful for those people that are willing to brave the elements to get the shot. I was able to take some photos for the Sadler family on New Years Day. And you want to talk about troopers, I think they are all half polar bear. They were like "it's cold?" At the exact moment my hands fell off. I think I heard their infant say under his breath, "what a baby" in my direction.
My hands are healing nicely.

The Noah

Cute, cute, cute! Noah was born on Thanksgiving day. And his mom tells me he has been gaining weight like a mad man. Which means he's their little lineman. Babies at this age sometimes seem to have two different faces a sleep and crying. Well he's got more than that.

Last stop of the weekend was the Scanlon's. Even though they asked for a quick shoot, I was surprised at the number of good photos that came out of the afternoon. It's always fun to take pictures of large groups. It never fails that when everyone looks great, there is always one person with their eyes closed, or strange contortion of a face. But that's why photographers take so many pictures. I hope they enjoy their non-conventional Christmas pictures.

The Engelman's

Saturday started a two day family portrait picturepoluza. The Engelman's live out it in Beaver Creek, OR. If you don't know where that is, go east of Oregon City and right before you get to Idaho you're almost there.

The drive didn't matter though. I love the Beaver Creek area, and the people that live there are pretty cool too. Plus nothing beats finishing a great shoot, and then playin' a couple of rounds of Halo 3 with the boys.

Mexico: The Crew

Narrowing down some of my favorites of the group was so difficult. Each individual had their own personal and unique experience during this time of service. Some focused on the outreach for the community, while others dove right into building two structures. For the majority of us we hadn't built anything of that magnitude. Luckily we were blessed with three amazing builder-leaders. If it were for those individuals we would have ended up slapping together one of the most off-balanced, unsquared (I made that word up), and poorly cut buildings that Mexico has ever seen.

For those of you that went of this trip, I thank you. I award all of you 1 Billion points. Each family will be receiving these pictures and much more probably next week.

Mexico: The Building

Two major character that has rose from two slabs of cement were the buildings that we built. One a house (which was pretty much completed before 2 o'clock the first day) and the second a community center. The house was for a pastor at the church and his family. Before we got to Mexico, his family was living at the church. While he was sleeping in a tent on the property that we would be building on. The community center being a much bigger job is where the majority of people helped with. Plus, we all knew that a group of rockin’ girls (code named: The pterodactyls) would be able to handle the completion of the home.

The community center entailed us building 16 foot high walls, and 24 truces. It became very humbling and scary event as soon as those walls and pieces of wood got into the air. We didn't have enough time to finish the center, however, the next group will be able to finish the sheathing. And before you know it those kids will be playing volleyball indoors.

Mexico: The Land

The hardest part of featuring land that is filled such poverty, is that even though you may travel to down one street that if filled with trash and homes half built out of stucco and ply board, the moment you turn the corner, the level of destitution has stayed the same. You go to a place like Tijuana and realize that for the majority of these people this will be the cycle of life that will always be constant. The children grow-up in a place where it treats them so violently that the decisions that they make are so adult and life changing that it often times directly mirrors the mistakes of those that have gone before (i.e. unplanned pregnancies).

About 9 months ago my wife, Tabatha, and I made a commitment. And no it was not have a child (sorry mom). We committed to spending our Thanksgiving break in Tijuana. Well the holiday has come and gone. And so did our time Mexico. It becomes so hard to communicate to others what we experienced, who we met, and how we tried to help these individuals.

The thing with missions trips is that they are always different. The previous three times I had been to Mexico I felt like my role was to help lead the building of a home. This time I had been asked to lead by documenting this event. Well after 1500 pictures, I've been able to narrow them down to some of my favorites.

Over the next couple of days (which lets be honest, it will probably turn into weeks) I will post more pictures. Each post will have a theme around it. So stay tuned.

I had so much fun taking pictures of people in the community. Again, it's hard to explain what went on. So instead of just mumbling on and on, I'll just show you the pics.

Wilson River Photography Has Gone Commerical

Last month I was asked to take pictures for a local Yoga Studio called Fitness Now. They do much more then Yoga, so if you're in the area check them out. It was a great learning expeirence. I want to personally thank FN for their patience with me in actually directing the models. They were so willing to pose for so such a long time that it almost seemed inhuman. Let just say that know what they are doing.

I've been wanting to take these kids pics for while now. Carson cuddles so much you could take those hugs to the bank. I don't know what that means. Anyways, Carson burnt himself right before they came down. Which is why he's putting on his tough guy face during the whole shoot. Kaitcha was her usually easy going self. Which worked out to a be a fun contrast.

Fish Camp...

SIDE-NOTE***I assisted again, the great Bethany Fiegals. She had been to the location, however, I don't think she understood how much I fish. The property the ceremony was at was amazing. A large lawn, bunk houses for friends, two barns/garages, and a course being right on some great fly fishing water. Even though I didn't get any shots of the river, I was constantly looking back over my shoulder.

Oh yeah, WE SHOT A WEDDING. The couple had one of the largest wedding parties ever. It may have chaos at times, but it was great experience learning to bring each personality into the equation.

Coast to Hood

Out of sheer luck we decided to take a trip to Seaside last weekend to enjoy the golden warm beaches of the Oregon coast during the largest relay race in the world; Hood to Coast. Which leads me to ask a question that I've been saying for years. Whatever happened to sitting?

Everyone knows of the Hood to Coast. However, not many people have decided to take on the much harder, and lesser known Coast to Hood. Above is a picture of my two man team (Team Never Fail) at the start of the race. For most of the relay we lead the field of one. But in mile .0002 we took a wrong turn and ended up at Moe's Restaurant. Leading to our inevitable disqualification. Anyways, there is always next year.

I was able to shoot my first wedding! I know many wouldn't like to hear that I've only done one so far. On the other hand, you have to start somewhere. I'm not ashamed of it. Mainly because things will only go up from here on out.

My wedding gallery right now is filled with only samples of wedding numro uno. Colette and Fletcher were great to shoot. They were so laid back with everything, they made the choas of getting things right the first time so much easier.

The Launch

So it has begun...I'll be honest and say that I'm not much a writer. I say things to fast in my mind that I can't get them out of my head and on paper in time to make any sense. Which didn't really me much in college.

With that being said. I am off and rolling. I've been able to do a couple of engagement sessions and a wedding to boot.

As more projects come down the pipe, I will keep this updated.
